Course objectives

The aim of the course is to present the compendious history of the ancient Greek literature, the first European literature at all. The Greeks contributed to the Western Civilisation by inventing the majority of literary genres which were therafter adopted by particular European national literatures, mediated to them by Roman literature (taught in the course MED 06).

Learning outcomes

After the completion of the course the students:
can describe the development of the Greek literature together with the historical context;
can characterize relevant genres of Greek prose and poetry and describe their particularities;
can name the prominent figures of the genres in question and characterize their works;
can intepret the particular Greek writings on account of individual reading of their Czech translations;
are also informed about the relevant secondary literature.

• 10. Highlights of the Greek historiography (Herodotus; Thucydides; Polybius);

Teaching methods

The course is provided as lectures, which are supported by an e-course.

Assessment methods

To obtain the credits, students have to succeed in the written test consisting of multiple-choice questions (including questions concerning the individual reading), minimum pass level 60 % + they have to supply a short essay-analysis of the individal reading of ancient greek literature.
