Course objectives
As part of the course, undergraduates will concentrate on learning about the historical development of records management from the original civil-service offices up to the present performance of records management. The aim is to provide a basic theoretical knowledge of the creation, development and prospects of records management, introduce the legislative development of records management in the Czech Republic, the possibilities for the performance of records management among various kinds of originators stemming from valid legal provisions, build up a level of understanding of records management as an information system. Another integral part will be a knowledge of present-day legislation which is related to records management. Particular emphasis will be placed on current differences in the management of records among public-sector and private-sector originators, and the management of records in paper and electronic form. Based on the lectures, students should understand the historical significance of records management, understand the significance of the performance of records management today; they should acquire and apply a knowledge of the consistency and continuity between records and archive management, learn the principles of the performance of records management in all its stages, how to devise new file orders, how to perform file separation and how to perform supervision over records management among individual originators on account of a higher authority, and how to perform methodological inspections.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, students should be able to:
- describe and explain the historical and legislative development of records management;
- be well versed in individual legal provisions related to records management;
- be well versed in records management performed in paper or electronic form;
- be well versed in the performance of records management among various types of originators;
- explain and demonstrate an ability to understand the given topic.

  • Individual stages of the performance of records management – in-depth analysis of individual stages -Receiving, labelling, registration and distribution of documents, handling and signing documents, sending documents, storing documents, decommissioning and archiving documents

Teaching methods
Teaching will be provided in the form of lectures with the use of technological resources in specially equipped study rooms (Power Point) and supplemented by examples of archive materials related to records management issues.
Assessment methods
Assessment will be carried out by an individual oral examination for each student.
