- Course objectives
- The aim is to introduce students to the administration and operation of an automated library system and to allow them to try out these activities in practice. Using the example of Koha to show the breadth of the library system agenda and how it affects processes and services.
- Learning outcomes
- The student after completing the course: - will be able to run Koha and perform its basic configuration; - understand the principle of standard protocols; - will be familiar with the current formats used in ALS; - understand the impact of ALS on library processes and services; - will be able to export ALS data for analysis purposes.
- Syllabus
- 1) 21.9.2022 (12:00-16:00) - Metadata in automated library system - data formats and rules (MARC21, BIBFRAME, RDF/Linked data, MODS, METS, DC, RDA, FRBR) - metadata errors - protocols - data migration 2) 12.10.2022 (12:00-16:00) - Automated library system - selection of the library system - local solution vs. cloud - installation and configuration of the instance - identities and their use in practice 3) 2.11.2022 (12:00-16:00) - Library processes and ALS - parts of ALS - types of items and management of their circulation within the library - definition of borrowing and reservation rules - setting up notifications to readers - payments 4) 23.11.2022 (12:00-16:00) - Statistics and analytics in ALS - statistics - use of analytics in libraries - what data can be collected from the system - Koha Center - statistics centre - analysis and visualization in practice - tools (OpenRefine + web applications for data visualization)
