Course objectives
The course Reading Latin Script of the Middle Ages II follows on from the course Latin Script and Book Culture in the Middle Ages II (1200–1500) and prepares students for reading and interpreting texts written in Latin script in the period from the 13th to the 15th century. (Gothic minuscule, Gothic diplomatic minuscule, Gothic cursive and bastarda). Students are therefore recommended to enrol on the course Latin Script and Book Culture in the Middle Ages II (1200–1500) at the same time. Students will improve their ability to read the above-mentioned types of book and charter script using extracts that follow on from the sources studied in the seminar part of the course Latin Script and Book Culture in the Middle Ages II (1200–1500).
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will be able to:
- apply their knowledge of the development of writing from the 13th to the 15th century to specific sources, particularly for dating undated texts and determining their possible provenance;
- transcribe and prepare selected original Latin, Middle High German and Old Czech texts from the period 1200–1500 for a critical edition;
- read and analyse original Latin, Middle High German and Old Czech texts (books and charters) from the period 1200–1500.
