Course objectives
Chordata, characteristics, relationships, ancestry and evolution. Urochordata, tunicate larvae, adult Ascidiacea, Thaliacea and Copelata. Cephalochordata, morphology, ontogeny and ecology. Vertebrata, characteristics and system. Vertebrate anatomy, ecology, behaviour and phylogeny. Jawless vertebrates, fossils and living Myxini and Petromyzones. Vertebrates with jaws, Gnathostomata, characteristics and system. Fossil fish-like gnathostomes and living Chondrichthyes. Actinopterygii, Sarcopterygii incl. Aves and Mammalia. Morphology, ecology, behaviour and system of recent vertebrate groups.
Learning outcomes
Student can demonstrate - a general body plan of Chordates and Vertebrates, respectively, and their main evolutionary lines; - their position in phylogenetic system of deuterostomes on a basis of morphological and molecular features; - to understand high diversity of the main taxons of chordates and vertebrates, respectively, after their relationship between taxons, and to appoint apomorhies of particular taxons; - to construct phylogenetic trees after acquired theoretical knowledge according to relations between recent evolutionary lines - to understand evolution of main groups in space and time - ancestral and recent taxons; - to understand that the basic units in modern systematics must be evolutionary events leading to divergence of taxons, but not discreption taxons after their morphological similarity; - to applicate theoretical knowledge to concrete situations and its using in nature conservation etc.
Syllabus
  • - Chordata, characteristics, relationships, ancestry and evolution. - Urochordata, tunicate larvae, adult Ascidiacea, Thaliacea and Copelata. - Cephalochordata, morphology, ontogeny and ecology. Alternative classifications: "Pisces" and Tetrapoda, Anamnia and Amniota. Cladistic approach. - Primarily aquatic fossil gnathostomes and living Chondrichthyes. - Actinopterygii and aquatic Sarcopterygii, morphology, ecology, behaviour and system. - Tetrapoda: Fossil groups and living Lissamphibia, morphology, ecology, behaviour and system. - Tetrapoda: Amniota - morphology, ecology, behaviour and system. - Aves - morphology, ecology, behaviour, system, domestic birds. - Mammalia - morphology, ecology, behaviour, system.
