- Course objectives
- The course is focused on economic, medical/veterinary, environmental and cultural aspects of entomology. It is complementary to other courses related to entomology at the Faculty of Science, MU (viz. Bi6760 Entomology, Bi9790 Advanced entomology, Bi8780 Insect systematics and phylogeny, Bi8763 Identification of terrestrial invertebrates - lab course, and Bi0055 Field course in entomology) which all cover mainly general and systematic entomology but not other issues. Namely, the Applied entomology course deals with 1) insect pests, their identification and methods of their control; 2) insects beneficial to mankind and their use; 3) insect conservation and cultural importance.
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of this course, students should be able to:
- explain economic and cultural aspects of entomology;
- demonstrate problems caused by insect pests including invasive species and newly emerging diseases vectored by insects using specific examples;
- explain principles of various methods of insect pest control, their positive and problematic aspects and limits of their use;
give examples of insects beneficial to mankind as biocontrol agens, indicators, sources of material, chemical compounds and food etc. and know basic practical/methodological aspects of such uses
- explain the background and basic principles of insect conservation, including the most important national and international laws related to it;
- identify the most important insect species from economic/medical/veterinary viewpoint in cetral Europe. - Syllabus
- 1. Introduction. Medical and veterinary entomology. Arthropod-born diseases and systematics and biology of their vectors. Myiasis, poisonous and allergenic insects and other arthropods.
- 2. Medical and veterinary entomology 2. Identification of groups and species of medical/veterinary importance.
- 3. Agricultural entomology. Economic pests, vectors of phytopathogenic microorganisms, invasive insect species, integrated pest management.
- 4. Agricultural entomology 2. Review of the most important agricultural crops in the Czech Republic and their pests. Study of material in collections and literature.
- 5. Forest entomology. Insects in forests, forest pest control and monitoring. Review of the most important woody plant species in Czech forests and their pests. Study of material in collections and literature.
- 6. Pests of stored products and households. Review of the most frequent taxa, hints on their identification. Study of material in collections and literature.
- 7. Methods of pest control. Insecticides, biological control, GMO, use of pheromones, sterile-insect technique (SIT), agrotechnical regulations.
- 8. Insect conservation. Threatened insect species in the Czech Republic and the world, causes of insect extinction, general guidelines for insect conservation, insects as bioindicators. National and international Red Lists and legislation. Examples of in situ and ex situ insect species protection. Endemic insects in the Czech Republic.
- 9. Forensic entomology. Army entomology. Insects as sources of raw materials (e.g. silk, dye), pharmaceutical compounds, food, laboratory organisms. Insects as pollinators, apiculture.

- A short final oral presentation on a topic from applied entomology selected by the student himself/herself. Oral exam + test from identification of pest and other relevant insect material.

- I) VSTUP: Mezioborové vazby. Hmyz jako nejbohatší složka ekosystémů: jeho evoluční úspěch, čím se úspěch projevuje. podíl hmyzu na utváření krajiny: ekosystémy přirozené a antropocenózy, ovlivňování prostředí využívaného člověkem, kolonizace nových území, introdukce. VZÁJEMNÉ INTERAKCE MEZI ČLOVĚKEM A HMYZEM: prostorové, vztahové, funkční vztahy: predátoři, potrava, paraziti, přenašeči, saprofágové, spec.funkce, opylovači (viz III). VYUŽÍVÁNÍ HMYZU ČLOVĚKEM: Hmyz v čase a prostoru: paleoentomologie, význam pro studia evoluce, rekonstrukce klimatu, datování vrstev pro archeologická studia, vazba na lidská sídla, paleoekologie, eutrofizace vod. Exobiologie. II) Hmyz jako indikátor kvality životního prostředí, charakteru a stupně vývoje ekosystémů a jejich změn: 2/1 co je to biodiagnostika, bioindikátor, čím se řídí výběr bioindikátorových organismů, jaké jsou typy bioindikátorů, využití synekologie hmyzu pro indikaci kvality biotopů, využití SQI, indexu pro vyjádření kvality území na příkladě dvoukřídlého hmyzu, bioindikace vlhkostních změn, indikace sukcesních změn, indikace zoogeografických prvků a klimatických změn, biomonitoring chemických změn v přírodě, cv. referáty. Pozn.: údaje týkající se využití hmyzu k bioindikaci znečistění vod viz Aplikovaná hydrobiologie v jarním semestru (Helešic), viz také přednáška ze Zoogeografie v jarním semestru (Vašátko). III) Hmyz ve funkci opylovačů: opylování rostlin hmyzem, chovy opylovačů, cv. návštěva chovné laboratoře (Ptáček). IV) Hmyz jako zdroj inspirace v technických oborech (bionika): spojovací konstrukce, bioluminiscence, chemoreceptory, termoreceptory, fotoreceptory, mechanoreceptory. Soudní a armádní entomologie, cv. materiál k det, příklady entomo-krimi příběhů. V) Hmyz jako zdroj obnovitelných surovin, výroba léčiv a kosmetiky, využití živého hmyzu pro lékařské účely, doplňkový zdroj potravin, chov hmyzu jako koníček, pokusná laboratorní zvířata, krmný hmyz, hmyzí zápasníci a sázky, rybářské mušky, cv. přinést příklady využití, vlastní chovaný hmyz. Hmyz v mytologii, zdroj inspirace v umění, jako přírodní materiál i inspirace v užitém umění, jako symboly v heraldice, hmyz v geografických názvech i jménech osob, ve rčeních a příslovích, hmyz v muzejních i amatérských sbírkách, hmyz v počítačových a fantasy hrách, cv. přinést příklady. VI) VLIV HMYZU NA ČLOVĚKA: Lékařská entomologie lidských obydlí: synantropní dvoukřídlí, krevsající hmyz, další hygienicky významný hmyz. Vnější prostředí urbanocenóz: skládky. Přírodní prostředí. Veterinární entomologie v chovech domácích a hospodářských zvířat, pastviny, stáje, včelstva, cv. determinace parazitů, přinést materiál. Pozn.: údaje týkající se acarologie viz jarní semest III. roč. Speciální parazitologie (Gelnar), jarní semestr Lékařská parazitologie (Ditrich). VII) odhad rodů a orientační určení nejhojnějších jihomoravských komárů (Culicidae). VIII) Zemědělská entomologie, polní kultury, cv. determinace zemědělsky významných druhů. IX) Zemědělská entomologie, zahradnictví, ovocnářství, cv. determinace zemědělsky významných druhů. Problematika boje, signalizace, kontrola. X) Lesnická entomologie, cv. determinace lesnicky významných druhů (hmyz, požerky). XI) Entomofauna potravinářských provozoven, skladišť a domácností, synantropové. Cv. determinace synantropních druhů. SNIŽOVÁNÍ POČETNOSTI HMYZU NECHEMICKOU CESTOU: Radiace, radioaktivita a hmyz, cv. referáty. XII) Vliv mikroorganismů a jejich metabolitů na hmyz. VLIV ČLOVĚKA NA HMYZ: Hmyz a biologická ochrana, selhání biol. ochrany. Transgenní rostliny. Snižování biodiverzity, současné trendy v ochraně druhů, vyhlašování chráněných území na základě skladby entomofauny, obnova biotopů, vysazování vymizelých druhů, ochrana entomofauny v okolních státech, mezinárodní úmluvy.

Hmyz jako nejbohatší složka ekosystémů: jeho evoluční úspěch, čím se úspěch projevuje. podíl hmyzu na utváření krajiny: ekosystémy přirozené a antropocenózy, ovlivňování prostředí využívaného člověkem, kolonizace nových území, introdukce. VZÁJEMNÉ INTERAKCE MEZI ČLOVĚKEM A HMYZEM: prostorové, vztahové, funkční vztahy: predátoři, potrava, paraziti, přenašeči, saprofágové, spec.funkce, opylovači (viz III). VYUŽÍVÁNÍ HMYZU ČLOVĚKEM: Hmyz v čase a prostoru: paleoentomologie, význam pro studia evoluce, rekonstrukce klimatu, datování vrstev pro archeologická studia, vazba na lidská sídla, paleoekologie, eutrofizace vod. Exobiologie. II) Hmyz jako indikátor kvality životního prostředí, charakteru a stupně vývoje ekosystémů a jejich změn: 2/1 co je to biodiagnostika, bioindikátor, čím se řídí výběr bioindikátorových organismů, jaké jsou typy bioindikátorů, využití synekologie hmyzu pro indikaci kvality biotopů, využití SQI, indexu pro vyjádření kvality území na příkladě dvoukřídlého hmyzu, bioindikace vlhkostních změn, indikace sukcesních změn, indikace zoogeografických prvků a klimatických změn, biomonitoring chemických změn v přírodě, cv. referáty. - At the end hereof course student will be able to understand and illustrate: Anthropic and environmental aspects of entomology. Paleoentomology, exobiology. Biomonitoring. Pollinators. Forensic and military entomology. Raw materials. Bionics. Cultural entomology. Medical, veterinary, agricultural and forest entomology. Entomology of stored products and food factories. Non-chemical pest control, biological control, transgenous plants, radiation, radioactivity, microorganisms. Biodiversity changes, protection of insects.

- Syllabus
- I) VSTUP: Mezioborové vazby. Hmyz jako nejbohatší složka ekosystémů: jeho evoluční úspěch, čím se úspěch projevuje. podíl hmyzu na utváření krajiny: ekosystémy přirozené a antropocenózy, ovlivňování prostředí využívaného člověkem, kolonizace nových území, introdukce. VZÁJEMNÉ INTERAKCE MEZI ČLOVĚKEM A HMYZEM: prostorové, vztahové, funkční vztahy: predátoři, potrava, paraziti, přenašeči, saprofágové, spec.funkce, opylovači (viz III). VYUŽÍVÁNÍ HMYZU ČLOVĚKEM: Hmyz v čase a prostoru: paleoentomologie, význam pro studia evoluce, rekonstrukce klimatu, datování vrstev pro archeologická studia, vazba na lidská sídla, paleoekologie, eutrofizace vod. Exobiologie. II) Hmyz jako indikátor kvality životního prostředí, charakteru a stupně vývoje ekosystémů a jejich změn: 2/1 co je to biodiagnostika, bioindikátor, čím se řídí výběr bioindikátorových organismů, jaké jsou typy bioindikátorů, využití synekologie hmyzu pro indikaci kvality biotopů, využití SQI, indexu pro vyjádření kvality území na příkladě dvoukřídlého hmyzu, bioindikace vlhkostních změn, indikace sukcesních změn, indikace zoogeografických prvků a klimatických změn, biomonitoring chemických změn v přírodě, cv. referáty. Pozn.: údaje týkající se využití hmyzu k bioindikaci znečistění vod viz Aplikovaná hydrobiologie v jarním semestru (Helešic), viz také přednáška ze Zoogeografie v jarním semestru (Vašátko). III) Hmyz ve funkci opylovačů: opylování rostlin hmyzem, chovy opylovačů, cv. návštěva chovné laboratoře (Ptáček). IV) Hmyz jako zdroj inspirace v technických oborech (bionika): spojovací konstrukce, bioluminiscence, chemoreceptory, termoreceptory, fotoreceptory, mechanoreceptory. Soudní a armádní entomologie, cv. materiál k det, příklady entomo-krimi příběhů. V) Hmyz jako zdroj obnovitelných surovin, výroba léčiv a kosmetiky, využití živého hmyzu pro lékařské účely, doplňkový zdroj potravin, chov hmyzu jako koníček, pokusná laboratorní zvířata, krmný hmyz, hmyzí zápasníci a sázky, rybářské mušky, cv. přinést příklady využití, vlastní chovaný hmyz. Hmyz v mytologii, zdroj inspirace v umění, jako přírodní materiál i inspirace v užitém umění, jako symboly v heraldice, hmyz v geografických názvech i jménech osob, ve rčeních a příslovích, hmyz v muzejních i amatérských sbírkách, hmyz v počítačových a fantasy hrách, cv. přinést příklady. VI) VLIV HMYZU NA ČLOVĚKA: Lékařská entomologie lidských obydlí: synantropní dvoukřídlí, krevsající hmyz, další hygienicky významný hmyz. Vnější prostředí urbanocenóz: skládky. Přírodní prostředí. Veterinární entomologie v chovech domácích a hospodářských zvířat, pastviny, stáje, včelstva, cv. determinace parazitů, přinést materiál. Pozn.: údaje týkající se acarologie viz jarní semest III. roč. Speciální parazitologie (Gelnar), jarní semestr Lékařská parazitologie (Ditrich). VII) odhad rodů a orientační určení nejhojnějších jihomoravských komárů (Culicidae). VIII) Zemědělská entomologie, polní kultury, cv. determinace zemědělsky významných druhů. IX) Zemědělská entomologie, zahradnictví, ovocnářství, cv. determinace zemědělsky významných druhů. Problematika boje, signalizace, kontrola. X) Lesnická entomologie, cv. determinace lesnicky významných druhů (hmyz, požerky). XI) Entomofauna potravinářských provozoven, skladišť a domácností, synantropové. Cv. determinace synantropních druhů. SNIŽOVÁNÍ POČETNOSTI HMYZU NECHEMICKOU CESTOU: Radiace, radioaktivita a hmyz, cv. referáty. XII) Vliv mikroorganismů a jejich metabolitů na hmyz. VLIV ČLOVĚKA NA HMYZ: Hmyz a biologická ochrana, selhání biol. ochrany. Transgenní rostliny. Snižování biodiverzity, současné trendy v ochraně druhů, vyhlašování chráněných území na základě skladby entomofauny, obnova biotopů, vysazování vymizelých druhů, ochrana entomofauny v okolních státech, mezinárodní úmluvy.
