- Course objectives
- Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able: to identify and describe the major classes of RNAs in Eukaryotic cells, to compare their primary, secondary and tertiary structures, to demonstrate the differences in the transcription, processing and function between different types of coding and noncoding RNAs. The students will be able to design an experimental approach how to study the function of given RNA. Moreover, the students will be able to assess the importance of RNA biology studies in mammalian development and disease.
- 1. Introduction to the RNA world 2. Gene expression: prokaryotes versus eukaryotes 3. Transcription of mRNAs 4. Messenger RNA processing: 5' end capping, polyadenylation 5. pre-mRNA splicing 6. RNA editing and trans-splicing 7. Ribosomal RNAs: transcription, processing, localization, ribosome synthesis 8. Noncoding RNAs I: snRNAs, snoRNAs, tRNAs 9. Noncoding RNAs II: CUTs, XUTs, SUTs, PROMPTs etc. 10. RNA silencing 11. RNA surveillance and degradation in the nucleus 12. Translation of mRNA 13. Methods to study gene expression: microarray analysis, RT-PCR, Northern blot, 3' extension, EMSA, RIP-Seq, ChIP-Seq etc.

- Teaching methods
- This class is in the form of lectures and class discussions.
- Assessment methods
- Ten written tests during the lecture courses followed by oral examination. Each test consists of two questions from the preceding lecture. Students can use their notes to answer the questions. 100% of correct answers is needed to pass with the grade A without following oral examination. If less than 100% answers correct, students are given a chance to correct the answers during final oral examination. 50% correct answers are required to pass the exam.
