- Course objectives
- The aim of this course is to learn work with MS Office software suite on the level allowing study of natural sciences at the undergraduate level. The emphasis will be on preparation for the future laboratory/practical courses, including simple data processing, their graphical presentation and preparation of the protocol and similar technical documents.
- Learning outcomes
- Upon course completion students will be able to:
- Use the tools from MS Office to prepare technical documentation.
- Work with simple, mainly quantitative, scientific data.
- Describe observation.
- Write a protocol.
- Basic computer literacy and orientation in scientific publications at the level of undergraduate study.
- 1. Introduction, MS Office, basic work on internet
- 2. MS Word – basic formatting, form of document, revisions, table of contents, numbering, tables, header and footer. Alternative software packages.
- 3. MS Excel – ordering and filtering of data, settings. Basic work with data (significant figures, data quality: accuracy, precision, deviations, measurements errors: random and systematic),
- 4. MS Excel – graphs – how to choose suitable graph type, deviations representation, axes and multiple axes, tables, basic equations, linear regresion
- 5. MS PowerPoint – basic settings, "rules" for aesthetic presentation, preparation of a presentation – basic parts, suggested additions, structure. Other presentation sofwtare (e.g. Prezi, pdf).
- 6. Writing a protocol – structure and parts, form, interpretation of the laboratory task
- 7. Sources of chemical, biological, biochemical and other environmentally relevant informations. Primary, secundary and tertiary literature sources. Types of documents. General strategy of the literature recherce.
- 8. Scientometry, IF, H-index, citation analysis. Introduction to the Web of Science and Scopus.
- 9. Online access to primary sources. Electronic journals, chemical databases. SciFinder, PubMed, MedLine, Science direct. Reaxys. Databases of chemical componds properties (ChemSpider, Comptox EPA).
- 10. Scientific paper and its structure. Types of papers. How to read a paper.
- 11. Peer-review: process, importance, reliability. Citation tools: EndNote, Zotero, Mendeley. Accessing documents from libraries. Library databases, KUK, Aleph. Cite-while-write, use of citation tools for effective writing.
- 12. The dark side of open access: pretending peer-review, SciHub, ResearchGate, bookfi. Publication ethic. Repeating.
