Prerequisites
No special astronomical knowledge are needed. However it is neccesary to know secondary school math and physics. All above this limit will be explained. This course is suitable for all students interested in astronomy. This course is meant especially to them, who do not have basic astronomical knowledge yet and want to study astrophysics or for all who are interesting in astronomy and astrophysics. It is suitable for advanced amateur astronomers, teachers, editors, popularizers.

The course is offered to students of any study field.
Course objectives
The aim of this course is to bring into line and harmonise basic astronomical knowledge. After this course student is able to effectively study following astronomical courses. In the end of the course student should understand basic astronomical terms, have basic knowledge about astronomical objects observable in the sky and should also know the night sky.
Syllabus
  • The text(book) is available in pdf form on http://astro.physics.muni.cz or http://www.physics.muni.cz/~zejda/student.html. Outline: 1. Historical introduction, basic terms, astronomical units 2. Systems of co-ordinates; Time, calendar 3. Night sky - planets, comets, meteors, satellites; stars, constellations, deep sky objects; influence of atmosphere on observations, seeing, light polution 4. Sun, Moon (moving in the sky), eclipses, aspects, minor planets, comets... 5. Information from space - meteorites, samples, particles, elmg. radiation (radiation of black body) 6. Spectroskopy – history, spectral classifications, spectral lines, stellar spectra, Doppler shift 7. Photometry – magnitudes, Pogson equation, distance modul, colour index, bolometric corection 8. Eye, optical telescopes, ground base observatories, space observatories 9. Non-optical astronomy (gamma, X-ray, UV, IR, radioastronomy); particle astronomy, grav. vawes 10. Solar system - summary, models (heliocentric VS geocentric), Keplers laws 11. Exoplanets 12. Creation of planetary systems 13. Life in the Universe

Teaching methods
Classic lectures, practical works and class exercises, added by observations. Written documents for practical works are in textbook on http://www.physics.muni.cz/~zejda/student.html or on the website of seminar tutors.
Assessment methods
Successful passing of this course will be granted after the processing of practical works, fulfilment of participation condition, passing of two writing tests during semester (50 % is needed to pass) and one writing test at the exam. At the exam student had to show knowledge about chosen subject and show understanding of solution of one of solved practical works.
