interpret the information
present mathematical topics using basic presentation techniques
summarize a mathematical text
compare and contrast
use arguments in a discussion on a mathematical topic (defend one´s opinion, opose, support arguments of a colleague)
create a CV, write a letter of application,
present oneself in a mock interview

Teaching methods
Listening exercises from audio and video sources with accompanying questions and ensuing discussion, reading comprehension of written texts dealing with popular science themes as well as specific scientific texts, translations into Czech language, development of curricula, formal letter writing, exercises in basic grammar within scientific content and style, analysis of word structure, word derivation, expansion of casual as well as scientific vocabulary, working with dictionaries, casual and scientific conversation.
Assessment methods
Each course is concluded with a credit test - 60% of correct answers 80% active attendance in seminars is required.

Due to the current epidemic situation the instruction in the autumn term will be carried out in a hybrid mode. Most work will be done online (using the interactive outline, homework vaults and discussion forums of the IS + MS Teams); however, three contact face-to-face lessons are also planned.

Listening exercises from audio and video sources with accompanying questions and ensuing discussion, reading comprehension of written texts dealing with popular science themes as well as specific scientific texts, translations into Czech language, development of curricula, formal letter writing, exercises in basic grammar within scientific content and style, analysis of word structure, word derivation, expansion of casual as well as scientific vocabulary, working with dictionaries, casual and scientific conversation.
Assessment methods
Each course is concluded with a credit test - 60% of correct answers 80% active attendance in seminars is required.

Course objectives
The aim of JAM03 course is: -to raise students‘ awareness of modern trends and practices among members of specific discourse communities (introducing language in the context of typical genres, practising those genres) -to practise and extend academic vocabulary and basic specialized vocabulary in biological context (e.g.: academic CV and cover letter for field-related jobs, job interview, the calculus, the history of maths symbols, the prisoner´s dilemma, graph theory, Euler circuit and path, Kurt Godel and mathematical logic, etc.) -to practise language skills and functions typical for natural sciences (e.g. process description, cause-effect, argumentation: persuasive/balanced, analysing: comparing/contrasting, evaluating, etc.) which the students will be able to apply to a narrower/more specific context of their specializations (transferrable skills) -to practise academic skills, e.g.: formal writing/note-taking from a lecture, identifying and formulating main ideas, identifying specific information, interpretation of information, text summary, taking part in discussions, speaking in public about biology-related topics, politeness markers in negative answers/giving negative feedback -to practise B2 grammar in academic or specialized context
Learning outcomes
By the end of the course, students will be able to: better understand an authentic global problem from the angle of their specialization and at the same time communicate it with other specialists in their team better understand interdisciplinary relationships formulate their key skills and motivation for the work in a research team (CV, letter of application for an internship, mock interview) think critically use English as a tool of communication, use functional academic language, specific language of the subject communicate their results effectively by making their presentations understandable

practising academic English in specialized context, and practising model activities and language techniques for English for Specific Purposes exam (JA002) preparation. Reading and listening comprehension, writing skills, team work, discussions and other spoken delivery, presentations.
Assessment methods
The course is completed upon successful accomplishment of coursework assignments: writing CV, writing cover letter and taking part in a mock interview, and receiving at least 60% score for the final credit test. At least 80% of attendance is required.

Listening exercises from audio and video sources with accompanying questions and ensuing discussion, reading comprehension of written texts dealing with popular science themes as well as specific scientific texts, translations into Czech language, development of curricula, formal letter writing, exercises in basic grammar within scientific content and style, analysis of word structure, word derivation, expansion of casual as well as scientific vocabulary, working with dictionaries, casual and scientific conversation.
Assessment methods
Each course is concluded with a credit test - 60% of correct answers 80% active attendance in seminars is required.

General objectives: 1. to develop sufficient reading abilities for students to be able to work with foreign texts 2. to develop speaking abilities for everyday commucation needs 3. to develop listening abilities for everyday communication needs 4. to develop sufficient written abilities for students to express themselves in respective fields of study 5. to review basic principles of grammar in new contexts General tasks: Students will learn: 1) *cursory reading, text comprehension (skimming) *text information gathering (scanning) *grasping of main concepts within a given text *identification of main themes and various arguments withing given texts *inductive and deductive thought processes *discerning between fact and opinions *summarizing texts 2) To be able to speak about oneself, life, his or her studies 3) general aswell as specific understanding of spoken word (listing to recordings) 4) Resume writing and filling out of various application forms 5) consolidation of grammar in various contexts Evaluation: One written credit test

Cílem výuky je rozvinout schopnosti studenta prezentovat výsledky vlastního výzkumu na mezinárodním fóru a sledovat nejnovější poznatky ve studovaném oboru.

  • Obecné cíle: 1. rozvinout mluvní dovednosti potřebné pro komunikaci v situacích typických pro oblast vědy 2. rozvinout čtecí dovednosti tak, aby se studenti vypořádali i se složitějšími autentickými odbornými texty 3. rozvinout poslechové dovednosti tak, aby umožnily studentům porozumět odbornému textu 4. rozvinout dovednost psát tak, aby studenti dovedli sestavit žánry (typy textů) typické pro oblast vědy 5. seznámit studenty se základní odbornou terminologií 6. zopakovat a prohloubit znalost gramatiky v nových kontextech Obecné úkoly: Studenti 1. se naučí, jak popsat proces, systém, jak vyjádřit příčinu a následek, jak interpretovat grafy, jak přednést akademickou prezentaci 2. si dále prohloubí dovednosti uvedené v sylabu akademické angličtiny pod bodem 1. 3. se naučí, jak si dělat poznámky ze slyšeného textu 4. se naučí, jak psát žádost o zaměstnání, formální a neformální dopis, laboratorní zprávu, abstrakt, odborný článek 5. prohloubí si znalost odborné terminologie 6. upevní si znalost gramatiky Hodnocení: 1 písemný zápočtový test za semestr

Cílem výuky je rozvinout schopnosti studenta prezentovat výsledky vlastního výzkumu na mezinárodním fóru a sledovat nejnovější poznatky ve studovaném oboru.

  • Obecné cíle: 1. rozvinout mluvní dovednosti potřebné pro komunikaci v situacích typických pro oblast vědy 2. rozvinout čtecí dovednosti tak, aby se studenti vypořádali i se složitějšími autentickými odbornými texty 3. rozvinout poslechové dovednosti tak, aby umožnily studentům porozumět odbornému textu 4. rozvinout dovednost psát tak, aby studenti dovedli sestavit žánry (typy textů) typické pro oblast vědy 5. seznámit studenty se základní odbornou terminologií 6. zopakovat a prohloubit znalost gramatiky v nových kontextech Obecné úkoly: Studenti 1. se naučí, jak popsat proces, systém, jak vyjádřit příčinu a následek, jak interpretovat grafy, jak přednést akademickou prezentaci 2. si dále prohloubí dovednosti uvedené v sylabu akademické angličtiny pod bodem 1. 3. se naučí, jak si dělat poznámky ze slyšeného textu 4. se naučí, jak psát žádost o zaměstnání, formální a neformální dopis, laboratorní zprávu, abstrakt, odborný článek 5. prohloubí si znalost odborné terminologie 6. upevní si znalost gramatiky Hodnocení: 1 písemný zápočtový test za semestr

Listening exercises from audio and video sources with accompanying questions and ensuing discussion, reading comprehension of written texts dealing with popular science themes as well as specific scientific texts, translations into Czech language, development of curricula, formal letter writing, exercises in basic grammar within scientific content and style, analysis of word structure, word derivation, expansion of casual as well as scientific vocabulary, working with dictionaries, casual and scientific conversation.
Assessment methods
Each course is concluded with a credit test. 85% attendance in seminars is required.
