Course objectives
Main objectives can be summarized as follows: to broaden student's GIS knowledge on practical applications in selected geographical disciplines. The subject is focused on physical geography. Main topics are as follows: data sources, spatial data formats, digital terrain modelling, GIS analysis with vector and raster (grid) data. At the end of the course student should be able to understand basic methods of geoinformatics explained in individual lectures. He/she would be able to explain when to apply individual methods and make reasoned decisions about preconditions that are necessary for proper utilization of methods in physical geography. He/she would be able to work with information on data preparation, make deductions based on acquired knowledge concerning application of methods and properly interpret results.
Learning outcomes
Outputs from the learning process comprise competences of critical evaluation of analytical and synthetical geospatial methods applicability as well as interpretations of geospatial analyses results.

  • 1. Sources of spatial data for physical geography
  • 2. Data types and formats, import, data conversion
  • 3. Analog to digital data transfer
  • 4. Basics of GIS, connection of spatial and descriptive attributes, data querying
  • 5. Simple calculations on vector data in GIS, overlay map algebra
  • 6. Digital terrain modelling (DTM)
  • 7. Spatial interpolation in ArcMap, Thiessen polygons
  • 8. DTM derivates, terrain analysis
  • 9. Hillshading, terrain profiles
  • 10. 3D vizualization, data animation (ArcScene)
  • 11. Raster modelling, basics of map algebra
  • 12. Hydrological modelling basics

Teaching methods
Lectures explaining basic terms from geoinformatics, spatial analysis and digital cartography and presenting individual examples step by step. Practical training based on 11 exercises that are solved using GIS and software for spatial analysis.
Assessment methods
Elaboration of all practical excercises is the necessary conditon for passing the exam. Exam in the form of practical test.
