Student must be able to do common works on computer and he should be interested in maps and geography.

Course objectives
The goal of subject is to introduce students of other programmes than geography and cartography into topic of geographic information systems (GIS) and with their possible using in other fields - including student's field of study.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course student will know environment of GIS software and will be able to complete the most frequent tasks – e.g. doing basic spatial analysis and making maps. They will be also introduced into complex analysis in GIS.

  • The most frequent tasks in GIS
  • Making of various types of maps - statistical map, overview map etc.
  • Available sources of spatial data and their using in GIS
  • Work with data from GPS
  • 3D visualization in GIS
  • Introduction to geostatistics
  • Terrain models - creation and using in analysis

Teaching methods
The course is based on practical class exercises based on the real tasks. Students will do it on computers in computer room. Short presentation about topic of actual lecture will be part of exercises. Student will work on defined tasks during the semester.
Assessment methods
The course is finished by test. Practical task in GIS is part of test. Completion of all exercises is a condition for participation on test.
