Course objectives
The aim of the course is to explain the terms soil and pedosphere and define the position of pedogeography in the system of natural science. Particular components of soil mass and their ecological qualities are presented. Especially accentuated is the explanation of soil forming processes and characterisation of their products - diagnostic horizons, soil profile and soil types. Further aim of the course is to make students familiar with the main global as well as national soil taxonomies, territorial aspects of soil distribution and the position of soil in the landscape ecosystem.
Syllabus
  • Pedogeography 1. Subject, aims and history of pedology and pedogeography: subject of pedology and pedogeography, position of pedology and pedogeography in the system of natural science, history of pedology, pedological schools, definitions of soil. 2. Weathering: composition of rocks at the earth surface, chemical weathering, physical weathering. 3. Composition of soils: soil as a dispergal system, anorganic and organic content of soils, soil water and air. 4. Properties of soils: texture, structure, sorption, chemical reaction. 5. Origin and development of soils (pedogenesis): soil forming factors, pedogenetic processes, soil profile, diagnostic soil horizons. 6. Classification of soils: FAO classification of world soils, classification of soils in ČR according to Šály. 7. Territorial differentiation of soil cover: geographical zonality of soils, latitudinal zonality of soils, altitudinal zonality of soils, structure of soil cover. 8. Soils and the environment: soil as an environment of plant growth, acidification of soils, heavy metals and radionuclides in soils, effect of climatic change on soils, nitrogenous compounds in soils, pesticides, drought. 9. Degradation of soils: causes of soil degradation, soil erosion, soil properties and plant cultivation, conservation of soil fertility, ecological farming.
  • Biogeography 1. Biogeography as a discipline of physical geography. Differences between biological, geographical and biogeographical approach. 2. Organism - population - geobiocenosis - geobiom - biogeosphere. 3. Ecological factors and conditions, autecology, synecology, demecology. 4. Development of biosphere. 5. Biogeography of Czech Rep., Biogeography of the world.
