Course objectives
The lecture gives an overview of anthropogenic threats to nature and nature conservation with regard to the global as well as the domestic situation. The focus is on the living component of nature and the biological or ecological basics (theories, strategies) of conservation (conservation biology). Conservation issues are made clear by presenting case studies. The objectives of the course are to 1) learn basic facts about the history of human impact on nature and 2) on the history of nature conservation as an human idea and activity; 3) to get acquainted with technical terminology and understand the meaning (and possible problems of interpretation) of terms as for instance "nature", "biodiversity" or "(bio)monitoring"; 4) to learn about the major threats to nature in the past and at present; 5)to get to understand the links between biological and ecological knowledge and conservation (population biology and genetics, resource availability - minimum dynamic area, etc.); and 6)to get an idea of the methods and tools of conservation as, for instance, reintroductions, reserves or inventories.
Syllabus
  • History of human impact on nature and the environment - history of nature conservation - global threats (population explosion, climate change, ozone hole, desertification, eutrofication, acidification, environmental pollution) - direct threats to populations, communities and ecosystems (hunting or fishing; habitat disturbance, down-scaling or fragmentation; introduction of predators or competitors)- conservation biology (ecological concepts and theories: r and K-strategies, succession, population ecology, island ecology, theorie of the mozaic cycle) - tools and methods of surveying and monitoring populations and communities incl. their evaluation in regard to their application in conservation (surveys, monitoring, red data lists, case studies) - fundamental tools to preserve biodiversty including genetic diversity (species / habitat conservation; in situ / ex situ measures - breeding in captivity, reintroduction, population and habitat management) - habitat management planning - habitat interconnection, protection of migration paths - overview of Czech and international legislation - international conservation activities / programmes, illegal trade with endangered species - categories and examples of protected areas in the Czech Republic and the international categories of protected areas.

Assessment methods
The course consists of a series of lectures. Credits are given based on the positive result of an oral exam (in case of increase of student numbers the exam might be a written one).
