Course objectives
After completing this course students will recognize and understand: The defining properties of the group, the multiplication table, and the class. Symmetry elements and operations. The point symmetry groups, classification of molecules. Representations of a group, characters. Selection rules in spectroscopy and applications to the chemical bonding.
Tracing the sources of symmetry arguments in chemistry the course objective also is the ability of applying them.
Syllabus
  • Introduction: symmetry in natural sciences including history

    1. Group, the defining properties, the multiplication table, subgroup, class.

    2. Symmetry elements and operations.

    3. The point symmetry groups, classification of molecules.

    4. Symmetry contingent molecular properties .

    5. Matrix representations of a group, characters.

    6. Irreducible representations and their characters degeneracy.

    7. Character tables of irreducible representations.

    8 . Transformation properties of the functions x, y, z, xy, xz, yz, x2, y2, z2 and rotations.

    9. Zero and non-zero values of integrals.

    10. Selection rules in spectroscopy.

    11. Symmetry of molecular vibrations.

    12. Applications to the chemical bonding.

Twelve lectures with exercises.
Assessment methods
The exam / colloquium takes the form of e-test lasting 60 minutes and consists of 13 questions (2 for 1 point, 6 for 2 points, 2 for 3 points, 1 for 4 points, 1 for 6 points, 1 for 10 points). Students may use textbooks and their personal notes. Rating: A: 40-28, B: 27-24, C: 23-20, D: 19-16, E: 15-12, F: 11-0, P: 40-10, N: 9-0.
