Course objectives
At the end of this course, students should be able to work aseptically, to inoculate and cultivate bacteria, to prepare stained and native microscopic slides, to determine number of bacteria in different samples, to isolate bacterial group from chosen samples, to work with yeasts, to use some basic identification methods.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the practical course of general microbiology students should be able to perform basic methods used in microbiological laboratory (methods of sterile inoculation and cultivation, slides preparation and microscopic examination of microorganisms, determination of the number of bacteria in different samples).
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction, work safety, organization of exercises.
  • 2. Isolation, inoculation and cultivation of microorganisms.
  • 3. Microscopic examination of bacteria (slides preparation, Gram - staining, microscopy and image acquisition).
  • 4. Direct determination of cell number in Bürker chamber, vital test, S. cerevisiae.
  • 5. Microorganisms in soil.
  • 6. Determination of susceptibility of bacteria to antibiotics.
  • 7. Reports, test.
