Course objectives
The main objective ot he course is the presentation to the students of chosen modern experimental methods in solid state physics, such as inelastic neutron scattering, Moessbauer spectroscopy, coherent scatterin of synchrotron radiation etc. The content of the lecture will be modified to include most recent methods.
Syllabus
  • 1. Inelastic neutron scattering: Propetries of thermal neutrons, sources of thermal neutrons, detectors. Neutron diffractometers, collimation, monochromatization. Neutron scatterring, nuclear and magnetic scattering, coherent and incoherent scattering Elements of theory of inelastic scattering. Experimental examples - phonons, magnons 2. Moessbauer spectroscopy: Principle of Moessbauer spectroscopy, the Moessbauer-Lamb factor Experimental realization - sources, detectors Chemical shift, hyperfine line splitting Experimental examples 3. Coherent scattering of synchrotron radiation: Generation of synchrotron radiation, basic properties Synchrotrons of the 3rd generation, free-electron lasers Collimation of synchrotron radiation, nano-beam diffraction Coherent scattering, phase retrieval methods Experimental examples
