Prerequisites
Bi7560 Introduction to R || NOW ( Bi7560 Introduction to R )
A basic knowledge of R is recommended, ideally completing the Introduction to R Bi7560 Introduction to R before or during the course.
Advantageous is the completion of Bi5040 Biostatistics - basic course.
Course Enrolment Limitations
The course is also offered to the students of the fields other than those the course is directly associated with.
fields of study / plans the course is directly associated with
Course objectives
The goal of the course is to make students familiar with common graphical mehots and their application in R, so that students are able to perform graphical data exploration and graphical summarization of research results.
Syllabus
  • 1) very basics of R and RStudio
  • 2) a bit of theory on the what a graph should contain
  • 3) bar-plots, line-plots, scatter-plots
  • 4) mapping of other variables into graphs
  • 5) how to work with colours
  • 6) summarization graphs - box plots, violin plots
  • 7) legend and annotations in graphs
  • 8) trellis graphs
  • 9) graphical display of models
  • 10) saving graphs and their fine tunning before print

Teaching methods
The class will be held in a computer room right in front of the computer. We will work in the R software using RStudio. At the beginning of each lesson a new method will be shortly presented after which students will exercise its application at their own computers.
Active attendance is not required but is strongly recommended.
Assessment methods
I plan to follow David Zelený's model of completion of the course, i.e.:
(1) 3 homeworks will be given, out of which 2 will be requested,
(2) students will present their graphical work on the last lesson.
However, I reserve the right to set up a practical in case the engagement of students in the class did not meet my expectations.
