- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to acquire the latest knowledge from the selected fields of meteorology and climatology (see specification below) and their adopting during own research.
- Learning outcomes
- After finishing the course the student will be able to:
- prove the latest scientific knowledge in the selected fields of meteorology and climatology,
- apply novel methodological and knowledge outputs during the creation of own PhD. thesis and during own scientific activity.
- The course includes the following scientific topics:
- 1. Meteorological measurements and instrumentation (measuring principles, sensors, data acquisition systems).
- 2. Experimental methods for estimating fluxes of energy and matter (eddy-covariance, profile method, case studies).
- 3. Modeling of the energy exchange (net-radiation components, determination of potential and actual evaporation, large-eddy simulation, case studies).
- 4. Mesoscale atmospheric processes (definition of scales, atmospheric dynamics, lower tropospheric phenomena, air mass boundaries, orographic phenomena, case studies).
- 5. Atmospheric boundary layer (physical description, assessments, variables, coupled system, case studies).
- 6. Climate of the small scale areas (Microclimatology, mesoclimatology, urban climate, case studies).
- 7. Past climates and methods of their study (palaeoclimatology, its parts and methods, historical climatology, case studies).
- 8. Recent climate change (global climate, climate forcings, spatiotemporal variability, environmental impacts, case studies).
- 9. Hydrometeorological and climatic extremes (extremes, spatiotemporal variability, forcings, environmental impacts, case studies).
- 10. Climate of the future (scenarios, models, projections, case studies).

- Teaching methods
- The student selects two topics from 10 topics mentioned above. According to recommendations of the teacher, the student will prepare a brief report of the latest scientific knowledge to the given topic (according to its partial specification) and in the oral form presents it during the colloquium with the teacher.
- Assessment methods
- At the beginning of the semester, the student selects two topics from those 10 mentioned above. After the first part of the semester in the date specified by the teacher is realized the first colloquium with the first selected topic. After the end of the semester, analogous colloquium to the second selected topic follows. The final course mark consists of the results of both presentations.
