Course objectives
Learning outcome of the course is to acquaint students with basic methods of sociological research, which they could use in writing their own bachelor's or diploma thesis and in his or her information practice. The topics covered are the basic chapters of the research methodology in the social sciences focusing on the LIS and the preparation of quantitative research. The course is not conceived as theoretically complete, but rather as practically oriented.

  • Role of science in LIS, paradigm and approaches in LIS
  • Types of research - experiment, ex-post facto research, field research; Qualitative and quantitative approach
  • Research problem and research questions
  • Research sample and data acquisition
  • The logic of quantitative research, the demands on research tools
  • Variables, operationalization, hypotheses
  • Methods of data acquisition: advantages and disadvantages of procedures
  • Creating a questionnaire
