Course objectives
Includes historical background for development of modern physics and an introduction to quantum mechanics, atomic and nuclear physics.
Syllabus
  • Old quantum theory; elementary introduction to quantum physics;
  • uncertainty principle, correspondence principle; one dimensional problems;
  • Hydrogen atom: Balmer series; Zeeman effect;
  • laser, optical pumping;
  • Frank-Hertz experiment;
  • determination of Planck's constant; measurement of e/m;
  • radioactive decay; basic nuclear physics and nuclear reactions
