CJVA1B is NOT the compulsory English course needed to complete your studies. CJVA1B has been designed as PREPARATION for CJVA2B, which is the compulsory English course. CJVA1B is intended for students who have an intermediate (B1+) knowledge of English. It is an ELECTIVE course for practicing and developing various language skills for students of Bachelor's studies.

Course objectives
This course is aimed at developing general and academic language skills (including appropriate grammar and vocabulary), as well as those needed by students in their field of study. The course deals with:

1. Speaking and presentation development - students must prepare a short oral presentation (6-8 minutes) on a topic relating to one of the seminar themes, or an aspect of the student's study area or interest. Presentation preparation also involves improving abilities in leading/participating in discussions and responding to questions, requests, or comments appropriately. Other oral skills involve discussions, expressing one's own ideas, paraphrasing others' ideas, critiqing peer work and summarizing the main ideas of academic texts.

2. Reading - working with academic texts that relate to the areas of study of FA students, and developing orientation, comprehension, and summarizing skills in relation to the readings;

3. Writing - expanding skills of summary writing, expressing ideas, and writing texts that pertain to the student's field of study;

4. Listening - developing aural comprehension in the context of discussions, presentations, and recordings. Tasks are based on understanding the main ideas of audio extracts, as well as specific details.
Learning outcomes
At the completion of the course, the student is able to do the following at a level of at least B1+ (CEFR):

1. Give a short presentation based on the criteria presented in the course, and respond appropriately to discussion questions posed afterwards; speak spontaneously and comprehensibly in the context of the class (e.g. discussions, expressing one's own ideas, paraphrasing, summarizing and critiquing others' ideas, including those that are in person, recordings and texts).

2. Read, understand and work with academic texts;

3. Write a variety of short texts (e.g. email correspondence, academic summary and other texts that pertain to the student's field of study);

4. Understand spoken language in the context of discussions, presentations, videos and recordings.

Requirements for course completion:

- 70% seminar attendance
- short oral presentation (6-8 minutes) on a topic relating to an aspect of the student's study area or interest. This should be based on the structure provided in the Presentation Skills seminar and on the Presentation Criteria posted in the Study Materials folders.
- short written assignments (e.g. formal email, short summary)
- language learning log (about 100 entries)
