Course objectives
Exploring aspects of Hollywood’s commercial and cultural history from the 1920s to the 1950s, this series of lectures will examine a range of models and methods that have been proposed for writing film history, and consider the compatibility of aesthetic and industrial histories of American cinema. After exploring the opportunities and limitations of symptomatic histories relying on critical interpretation, the lectures will consider some of the issues involved in writing institutional and contextual histories of cinema that are not centrally about films, and indicate some of the questions that this new perspective raises for the study of Classical Hollywood.
Syllabus
  • - introducing a range of models and methods that have been proposed for writing film history - considering the compatibility of aesthetic and industrial histories of American cinema - reflection of the opportunities and limitations of symptomatic histories relying on critical interpretation - writing institutional and contextual histories of cinema that are not centrally about films, and indicate some of the questions that this new perspective raises for the study of Classical Hollywood.
