Course objectives
What are the goals and methods that cinema uses for dealing with history ? In a nutshell, this is the major question underlying this course. Its main focus will be the visual (re)constructions of World War II in French cinema (with the possibility of comparative analysis with German, British, American films). By rebuilding the history of the making of the films, by considering all the layers of their writing (the several versions of the scripts; the contracts and the budgets; the archives of censorship; the process of editing.), we will see that the past was reconstructed by French cinema according to present day concerns (film being at the crossroad of political, commercial, artistic and professional influences and interests). The main aims and objectives of the course will be : - to test several theories and methods of analysing the relationship between film and history, - to analyse the construction of heroic mythologies and to take into account the issues of national identity in French post-war cinema ; - to highlight the fate of film archives by analysing the uses of footage in fiction and documentary cinema (as well as in TV programs) devoted to WW2 ; -to reflect upon the questions of narratives and time in the process of (re)writing the past.
