Course objectives
The aim of the course is threefold:
(1) Methods and objectives of research in Japanese language studies and Japanese studies (19th and 20th century).
(2) Czech “japoneries” from late 19th century onwards. Japanese language studies in the Czech Republic from 1940s onwards.
(3) Incorporation of Japanese and non-Japanese studies about “Japanese matters”- a contemporary perspective.
(4) Other culture- a historical perspective onto the “other” of Japanese culture.
At the end of the course students will be able to
define methods and goals in the domain of Japanese Sudies;
describe the development of Czech „japonerie“ from the end of the 19th century;
sketch the development of Japanese language studies in Czech lands from 1940’s
evaluate the possibilities of cooperation of Japanese Studies and non-Japanese studies on „Japanese matters“;
assess the approaches toward „the otherness“ of Japanese culture from historical perspective.

  • 9. Meeting with the continental “other“ in times of formation of modern Japan
