Course objectives
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
- be familiar with the current media-industry research and its methodological approaches
- have an understanding of the operation and history of the of global media conglomerates in the age of convergence.
Syllabus
  • Empires of Entertainment: Making and Selling Media in the Conglomerate Era

  • This course will provide an overview of global media conglomerates in the age of convergence. We will look at the history of these companies and the regulatory, industrial, economic and political dynamics that led to their creation. We will examine the "Big 6" (Time Warner, Disney, News Corporation, Viacom, NBC Universal and Sony) and analyze the developments in globalization and media culture that have supported and sustained the current political economy of entertainment in the U.S. Among the issues we will explore include intellectual property, creative labor, production and distribution practices, and advertising as they pertain to media culture in the conglomerate era.
