Course objectives
This course is a practical introduction in the basic procedures of historical research and critical comparison in the study of religions. Students gradually proceed from a basic bibliographic search through basics of textual and source criticism to a research project proposal. Students who pass the exam then follow this research project proposal and submit an essay.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, students will be able to:
  • perform and gradually deepen a bibliographic search using different resources and tools (efficient search on the internet, in library catalogues and databases of electronic resources; using footnotes of relevant contributions; searching for reviews; etc.);
  • distinguish sources from secondary literature;
  • understand the problem of genesis and tradition of a text (on a basic level);
  • use some basic concepts of textual criticism;
  • use the basics of source criticism in the interpretation of textual sources;
