Course objectives
The course consists of a lecture and a seminar. All participants are obliged to attend both classes.
In the lecture, a brief overview of periods of German literature is given. The seminar part focuses on techniques of literature analysis (both fiction and poetry).
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the students should:
- get a general idea of the periods of German literature,
- be able to explain typical features of each period relying on a detailed knowledge of one or two typical texts of the period,
- be able to analyze short poetry and short fiction for formal features and explain their function in the text,
- be able to write short written interpretations of such texts.

  • Seminar part:
  • - four-colour-method for analysis of literary texts,
  • - poetry analysis,
  • - analysis of short fiction,
  • - mock essays.

  • - brief overview of periods of literature history.
