At the end of the course students should be able to: understand and explain the concept of cinematic dispositif
Osnova
  • In this series of lectures we will start with exploring the concept of dispositif that has emerged in the 1970s in philosophy in the writings of Michel Foucault and in film studies in two influential essays by Jean-Louis Baudry. The latter were part of a larger debate in film theory about the relationship between technology and ideology that later became labeled “apparatus theory”.
  • More recently, among others in the 2002 DOMITOR conference held in Montreal, the concept of dispositif has been taken up by film and media historians, especially those working in the field of early cinema. In these lectures we will also explore the appropriation of the concept in a perspective of historical pragmatics and discuss its productivity for media historical research. Here, early cinema, the so-called “cinema of attractions” will provide the case to be studied.
