Course objectives
Vojtěch Jasný (b. 1925) - film director, scriptwriter, occasionally cinematographer in authorial and documentary projects - is one of the emblematic persons of modern Czech cinema. He began work in the 1950s as a maker of propaganda documentary films, later became one of the key representatives of the critical ur-wave, in the 60s made a reputation as an internationally renowned filmmaker of the new Czech cinema ("All My Good Countrymen", 1968). After leaving for exile, he worked in Austria and Germany (e.g. a Heinrich Böll adaptation "Ansichten eines Clowns", 1975) and later in the USA and Canada (e.g. a documentary film "Why Havel?", 1991). His filmography includes over fifty movies. Apart from them he directed for theater (Vienna, Helsinki) and gave lectures at film schools in Vienna, Salzburg, Munich and New York (Columbia University, New York Film Academy and School of Visual Arts).
Jasný’s work stands out not only for its width and diversity but also and mainly with its distinctive authorial approach, poetic style and spiritual values. Simultaneously, it is significantly influenced by extra-artistic, political and social conditions, or by mental, cultural and production patterns in various countries, where Jasný worked. We can find a peculiar tension between “transcending“, artistic and authorial aspects, and “determining“, political, industrial and the like aspects in his work. The “borderline“ aspect of Jasný’s films represents a special topic that is originated in the conflict of various experiences and cultures (exilic aspect).
Jasný’s work is intimately tied up with his life and certain circumstances, which are quite challenging not only on the personal and creative level but also as a symptomatic picture of the development of Czech post-war culture and society.
At the end of the course students should be able to understand and explain life and work of Vojtech Jasny in cultural and historical context and deepen their knowledge of the cinema history.
