Final state doctoral examination and defence of the doctoral thesis

The final exam consists of two parts. The first part consists of the exam passed by the student in the 7th semester of study (full-time). It includes questions about a general overview of the history of German-language literature (or other Germanic literature, focusing on contemporary modern literature), key literary methods, history of literary motifs, genres and themes, as well as the intermediary and intercultural aspects of the topic the doctor is engaged in in his dissertation work. The first three courses follow up on the two obligatory subjects "Spring Research and Methodology" (NJDSL4_01, NJDSL4_1), both "Doctoral Seminars" (NJDSL_1, NJDSL_2), "Methodology of Literary Sciences" (NARD50) and "Methods, Analysis and Interpretation" (CLDS_a26) that students enroll during their studies as compulsory subjects. The fourth part (intermediate and intercultural aspects of the dissertation topic) follows up the four compulsory specialization subjects: CLDS_a27 "Intermediality and Adaptation", NJDSL4_30 "Methodology of Literary and Cultural History", ROMDJK Multilingualism and Cultural Interface and AJ34140 "Selected Literature and Culture Theory". The content of these subjects is under the patronage of the four philological departments of FFMU, for whose students this specialization is determined within their literary program. Subjects are designed taking into account the current cultural-science trends of philological studies so that their structure meets the specific needs of particular doctoral specializations, without losing sight of their common transdisciplinary dimension.
The second part of the SZZ consists of a comissary defense of the dissertation, to which the student delivers the dissertation thesis and its theses to the opponents and members of the commission.

Requirements of the study

The key components of study duties in the doctoral program are related to the preparation and processing of the dissertation, which represents a comprehensive scientific publication based on original research.
The obligatory activities of the student are formulated in an individual study plan: In addition to the obligatory courses, they include their own creative activities and their presentation - active participation in at least two professional conferences and the publication of at least one study in a professional periodical.
A study stay at a foreign university or other research institution chosen with regard to the dissertation theme is recommended as part of the study and allows for consultation with foreign experts and the search of the current secondary literature (at least one month). This study stay may be replaced by another subject in exceptional and justified cases (eg family reasons) in agreement with the supervisor and the commission. The foreign internship may be attended repeatedly.
Compulsory subjects of doctoral studies include four types of subjects.
Subjects directly related to full-time studies, such as Thesis (NJDSL4_20), Doctoral Exam (NJDSL4_21) and Doctoral Work (NJDSL4_22).
Other types of subjects are the Specialized Publications (NJDSL_41), the Expert Report - Conference (NJDSL411) and the Foreign Internship (NJDSL412). In addition to journal or college studies, the subject can also be accepted in the subject NJDSL_41, even if the doctoral student issues a lecture paper from the lecture cycle NJII_23 "Literary themes and motives - selective lecture", which is held in the autumn semester. All these subjects can be written repeatedly, as they form the backbone of the professionally creative work of doctoral students.
The third type of course is called "Spring Research and Methodology" (NJDSL4_01, NJDSL4_1) and both "Doctoral Seminars" (NJDSL_1, NJDSL_2). Their content is related to the lectures for the students in the Master's cycle. The subject "Source research and methodology I" is conditioned by participation in course NJII_252 "Methods and Approaches of Modern Literary Science" or its analogy in another Germanic language. The subject "Source research and methodology II" is conditioned by the lecture given by the doctoral student at the course NJII_252 "Methods and Approaches of Modern Literary Science"
or its analogy in another Germanic language. Doctoral Seminars "(NJDSL_1, NJDSL_2) have similar conditions: one day to attend NJII_25" Determining Trends of Contemporary Literature "
or its analogy in another Germanic language and take it once, the course always takes place in the spring semester.
The fourth type of courses consists of "Methodology, Analysis and Interpretation" (CLDS_a26), the Methodology of Literary Sciences (NARD50), in which UGNN lecturers participate with the institutes of Romance, English, General Linguistics and Czech Literature.

Mandatory specialization subjects are four: CLDS_a27 "Intermediation and Adaptation", NJDSL4_30 "Methodology of Literary and Cultural History", ROMDJK Multilingualism and Cultural Interface and AJ34140 "Selected Literature and Culture Theory". Subjects are designed taking into account the current cultural-science trends of philological studies so that their structure meets the specific needs of particular doctoral specializations, without losing sight of their common transdisciplinary dimension. By completing these courses, the PhD student will have an understanding of the inter-cultural and intercultural (ie cultural) challenges faced by national philology.
The remaining number of credits (30) are optional subjects from the UGNN and other philological workplaces.
