Final state doctoral examination and defence of the doctoral thesis

Doctoral State Examination (SDZ) of the DCCI study programme is a commissional examination, that is usually followed by the defense of the dissertation. The examination board has a minimum of five and a maximum of nine members, one of whom is designated as chairman and two are external (see SER, Sec. 34).

Doctoral State Examination:
The Commission examines whether the graduates' knowledge of the new media arts, digital culture, and creative industries meets the requirements for doctoral studies under the European Qualifications Framework (EQF): "Graduates should demonstrate knowledge at the most advanced frontier of a field of work or study and at the interface between fields." Students are tested from two thematic areas, one of which examines their theoretical and the other methodological knowledge in topics that are freely related to the topic of the dissertation. Assignments are formulated by the members of the committee in advance with regard to the submitted thesis. During the exam, students will be given a space (15 minutes) to present each topic (including presentation of a list of processed literature and sources for each of the thematic areas). Subsequently, there is a discussion in which students are supposed to demonstrate their knowledge beyond the dissertation and their ability of critical reflection and cultivated argumentation of their opinions. The exam also includes a discussion of the thesis of the dissertation, which the student submits together with the application to the DSE (see SER, Sec. 32, point 6).

Dissertation defense:
It is held in conjunction with the (successfully completed) Doctoral State Exam usually. The supervisor, who also reflects the overall course of the PhD student's study, comments on the dissertation. Thesis reports are made by two opponents, at least one of whom must be an externalist. The PhD students have the opportunity to respond to the comments and questions of the opponents. The examination board takes into account the thesis reports, the defense of the student and the quality of the submitted dissertation. (More about Dissertation Defense: SER, Sec. 33)
