Study-related information
- Final state doctoral examination and defence of the doctoral thesisThe state exam tests the ability of students to participate in professional discourse within the discipline. The examination is composed of three methodological questions from the field of archaeology according to student’s specialisation. The fourth question addresses the main thematic points of the dissertation. Student can pass the state exam after completion of the fourth year of studies at the earliest, provided that he/she fulfilled all student duties except the submission of doctoral thesis.
In order to defend the dissertation, it is necessary to submit the treatise, key dissertation theses, and to prepare a presentation of the work in a length of 15 minutes. The dissertation defence is held before an expert commission. - Requirements of the studyThe student is obliged to work systematically on his/her own research project – dissertation topic. The dissertation will demonstrate the student’s ability to carry out independent research work. The thesis advisor oversees the professional training of the student and methodically directs the study of sources, research, textual preparation, fundamental theses and text of the dissertation.
Within the scope of general education courses, student must complete the courses in philosophy and foreign language. The foreign language course can be replaced by the Presentation in foreign language.
Doctoral student must attend 4x the collective Doctoral seminars (AED_A01a-d). In these seminars the student presents his/her dissertation project two times to the audience. First time in the first year of studies, second time (conclusions) in the third or fourth year of studies, and each student also holds one methodological presentation addressing the topic of his/her dissertation (Presentation in doctoral seminar AED_A02a-c).
Within the scope of Specialized courses I and II, the student attends lectures held by foreign experts.
Other duties:
Each doctoral student holds at least one time an oral presentation of his/her dissertation project in a public professional forum like a conference, symposium, workshop, or seminar.
Doctoral student, by agreement with the thesis advisor, publishes partial outcomes of his/her dissertation in the form of an article in a specialised peer-reviewed journal enlisted in internationally recognised databases: Scopus, Web of Science, ERIH+.
A compulsory part of the doctoral study programme is the publication of one paper in foreign language (Publication in foreign language).
It is recommended to complete one part of the studies or an internship in a foreign institution with a duration of at least one month (Study placement abroad), to take part in an international conference (Presentation in foreign language) and to maintain active contacts with international science community (consultations with foreign experts, or involvement in foreign research teams).
It is also recommended to apply for small-scale grant projects like FR MU or Dean’s grant, or to participate (be involved) in research work within a grant project of a wider collective (GA ČR, GA MU, NAKI, etc.).
State exam (30 credits):
Before the state exam and the defence of doctoral dissertation, student prepares a conspectus of his/her dissertation, which contains the text summarizing the fundamental premises, structure, main theses and conclusions of the work, list of bibliographic references and a summary in foreign language. - Proposal of dissertation topics and topics of defended dissertationsTeritorialita a regionalizace v pozdním eneolitu na Moravě – J.
