Final state doctoral examination and defence of the doctoral thesis

Candidates who wish to take the Doctoral State Exam and defend their doctoral dissertation are required to register for both events one semester in advance. They submit a registration form to the assistant for doctoral studies at the Study Department complete with the following attachments:
- Doctoral dissertation (3 hardcover copies);
- Doctoral dissertation summary (10 copies in A5 format);
- Structured curriculum vitae;
- List of publications.

Doctoral dissertations can be submitted throughout the academic year; however, both the dissertation and the registration form need to be submitted at least one semester before reaching the maximum duration of studies as specified by the study regulations.

A doctoral dissertation presents the results of work carried out by a candidate in the course of his/her studies in a doctoral programme. It must contain original results which have been either published or accepted for publication. A body of work previously published or accepted for publication in printed or other form may be recognized as a doctoral dissertation in case a comprehensive introduction and commentary are provided by the candidate.

A doctoral dissertation is written in the language a given programme is implemented in or in a language designated for this purpose in the doctoral programme specifications. If so specified in a faculty-issued regulation, a programme implemented in Czech may allow the submission of a doctoral dissertation written in Slovak. A doctoral dissertation may always be submitted in English unless explicitly proscribed by the programme specification. A doctoral dissertation may be submitted in a different language following the approval of the doctoral board.

A doctoral dissertation must always be submitted electronically via the IS MU. If so specified by the doctoral board, the dissertation is also submitted in printed form. The doctoral dissertation must fulfill the additional requirements:
a) In case the submission of printed copies is stipulated, the cover and title page must be of the same design, the dissertation format must comply with standard usage at the faculty and all copies must be hard-bound. The number of copies is determined by the doctoral board.
b) In case the work submitted for a dissertation defence constitutes a joint project a candidate has participated in, the parts he/she has written must be clearly indicated as such. The dissertation must include an attached statement of co-authorship attesting to a candidate’s authorship of the indicated parts of the dissertation and evaluating his/her contribution.

The state doctoral exam consists of the oral defense of the final qualification / dissertation thesis and the subsequent examination in the subject of Psychology which covers the fundamental areas of the historical and contemporary theoretical background of the given discipline in the context of its possible interdisciplinary overlaps and application areas and the methodology and ethics of psychology.

Other information relevant to the Doctoral State Exam and to doctoral dissertations can be found in the official MU Study and Examination Regulations:

Requirements of the study

The structure of the curriculum in the doctoral study programme Psychology is based on the MU Study and Examination Regulations, registered by the Ministry of Education and Science on 27 June 2017, effective from 1 September 2017 , with Part 2 being the most important in the context of doctoral studies. Organisation and registration of studies (Art. 6 - Art. 21), Part 4. Study in the doctoral programme (Art. 27 - Art. 35) and Part 6. Common, transitional and final provisions (Art. 40 - Art. 48).

The study obligations are determined by the structure of the curriculum, which is set out in the Curriculum of the relevant study programme, which consists of, inter alia:
- preparation of the dissertation and its thesis;
- completion of compulsory courses that include professional and linguistic competences (active participation in educational events, presentation of partial research results, application of at least two publications in WOS/SCOPUS - including one with IF);
- participation in the research activities of the department;
- completion of a part of the study at a foreign institution for at least one month, or participation in an international creative project with results published or presented abroad, or other form of direct participation of the student in international cooperation - the curriculum of the submitted programme includes a Foreign Semester Study Stay, or Expert Paper II (at a foreign conference) - the student chooses one of the options;
- Teaching activity - participation in teaching in Bachelor and Master degree programmes, consulting final Bachelor theses under the supervision of the supervisor;
- involvement in the organisational activities of the department.

Within the framework of doctoral studies, students participate in teaching within the Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes as practitioners (e.g. leading seminar groups, practically oriented exercises, etc.), under the supervision of their supervisor or the supervisor of the course. Students may be supervisors of final bachelor's theses in their area of research interest; here too, their work is subject to the professional supervision of a supervisor who supervises all the teaching and research activities of the doctoral student concerned.

Proposal of dissertation topics and topics of defended dissertations

The themes of the qualification work are based on the definition of research priorities and strategic interdisciplinary research themes that correspond to the long-term research intentions of the workplace, which are realized in the research and teaching centers: PHIC Center of Psychology of Health and Diseases; CEPCoS Center for Experimental Psychology and Cognitive Sciences; ACPP Academic Center of Positive Psychology; ACPS - Academic Counseling and Supervision Center.

In the exceptional case, a research topic may also be dealt with outside the above-mentioned areas of research interest but must be approved by the tutor and the board.
