Study plan

The exam consists of three parts, namely, a) from the broader scientific perspective, where the doctoral student demonstrates their knowledge of history and the history of administration, b) from the auxiliary historical sciences and c) from his/her own specialization. A discussion is also conducted on two of the three reports prepared by the doctoral student. A condition for a successful outcome in all parts of the exam is the student’s ability to give an overview of the current state of development of the individual disciplines and his/her knowledge of the latest literature.

The standard duration of the doctoral degree study programme is four years. During their studies, students must obtain 240 credits.
Based on the focus of their dissertations, doctoral students are involved in the research activities of the institute (the edition CDB, the edition of literary monuments of the early Czech Reformation, the edition Regesta Imperia, the edition of early modern official sources). They acquaint students of bachelor’s and master’s programmes with the results of their research in selected lectures. It is also recommended that they attend lectures and seminars organized for doctoral students by the Centre for Medieval Studies in Prague and participate in Brno Medieval Fridays and other specialist conferences. It is also obligatory that they attend regular doctoral students’ meetings, during which senior students, under the guidance of their supervisor and in front of a committee of the Programme Board (PB), acquaint the PB and less senior students with the progress of their work on their dissertation and other selected problems related to their scientific work.
