Final state doctoral examination and defence of the doctoral thesis

The doctoral state exam within the programme English Linguistics with Specialization in Experimental and Applied Linguistics focuses on the following three areas:
- selected topics in modern linguistics, or in historical linguistics (the students select one of the two disciplines)
- the contribution of the Prague School to the development of linguistic research
- selected topics in experimental and applied linguistics, determined according to the research focus of the student
The focus of the exam is on experimental and applied linguistics, especially topics in corpus linguistics, cognitive linguistics, and the study of language acquisition. It includes questions concerning the methodology of experimental and applied linguistics.
The defence is organized either on the same day or at a later date according to the recommendation of the supervisor. During the defence, the students present the theoretical background and the results of their dissertation, and respond to questions mentioned in the opponents’ reviews and to the questions of the examination committee.
