Studies

  • Objectives

The doctoral degree programme of Advanced Materials is intended for talented graduates of the Master's degree programme. Possible topics usually include the physical and chemical studies of advanced material systems, building upon the expertise and tradition of the Faculty of Science and cooperating institutions - mainly CEITEC and the institutes of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic.

The students of the doctoral degree programme will become members of research teams and participate in their regular research activities; after graduating, they will be able to work as independent researchers. To successfully complete their studies the students must publish their results in renowned physics journals, actively participate in scientific conferences and workshops, and also in foreign internships. This will guarantee the ability of the students to communicate with foreign colleagues in English, and, possibly, also in other languages. The goal is to prepare students for their independent work at universities and institutes dealing with research and development in the Czech Republic and all over the world.

  • Learning Outcomes

After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

    • independently and creatively solve problems of materials research, from their formulation and solution using appropriate approaches to the interpretation of the results
    • perform independent creative scientific work and publish results in renowned scientific journals
    • apply experience from long-term scientific internships in high-quality foreign scientific institutions
    • actively use English and/or other frequently used languages in scientific communication
    • solve problems outside their specialization
  • Occupational Profiles of Graduates

The graduates will find employment as teachers and researchers at universities and institutes of the Academy of Sciences, as well as research and development laboratories in industrial and specialized research institutes. They might also be employed outside the scientific environment as managers and in areas of public administration associated with education and research.

  • Rules and Conditions for the Creation of a Study Plan

The rules and conditions of the doctoral studies are defined by the Study and Examination Regulations of Masaryk University and the Faculty of Science of Masaryk University:

    http://www.muni.cz/sci/study/phd/guide.

The study plans are designed for individual students and their tutors are responsible for their observance.

The integral parts of the plans are foreign internships, participation in conferences, and publishing results in scientific journals.

  • Goals of Theses

To complete the doctoral studies the students have to pass the doctoral state examination which consists of the defence of the doctoral thesis and a theoretical examination; this should evaluate the students' knowledge of the broad theoretical background of their doctoral thesis.

The conditions are defined in detail in Section 5 and further sections of the Study and Examination Regulations:
