Genes are responsible for everything.

Degree programme objectives

The Master's follow-up program Molecular Biology and Genetics deepens the basic knowledge of the areas of genetics and molecular biology that students have acquired during the Bachelor's degree program. It is one of the main MA programs in the field of Biology, characterized by the persistent high interest of students from MU and other universities in the Czech Republic. During the Master's degree, students extend their knowledge of molecular biology prokaryotes, eukaryotes, viruses, plant genetics, animal genetics and human genetics. Significant transferable experience as well as very specific theoretical and practical expertise are gained by students during the two-year master's thesis, which includes work with specialized information (searching, sorting, preparation of expert text) and extensive experimental activities, adoption of specific methodologies, evaluation, critical discussion and presentation of results. At regular seminars during their studies graduates acquire the skills of professional discussion and communication, presentation of their work and critical thinking.

The aim of the Master's degree program in Molecular Biology and Genetics is to provide graduates with information and experience that will guarantee their high adaptability in various areas of biological research and practical applications where molecular biological approaches to the problem are applied. The graduates find good use especially at the institutes of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, laboratories and departmental research institutes, especially in the fields of health, veterinary medicine, agriculture, pharmacy, environmental protection and commercial diagnostic and forensic laboratories. Graduates are thus able to independently conduct research and development activities in various fields of experimental biology, including conducting research project teams.

  • Learning Outcomes

After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

    • describe the structure and functioning of genes and genomes in viruses, bacteria and animal and plant organisms
    • describe the principles and essentials of changes in the genetic makeup of organisms that affect its proper function; apply molecular diagnostic approaches for searching and analyzing mutations
    • to correctly select and apply appropriate methodological procedures necessary for the study of biomacromolecules carrying out molecular biological and genetic processes
    • to explain how genetically engineered organisms can be targeted, including the use of genetic engineering methods
    • analyze the genome and proteome to apply bioinformatics approaches and use them extensively in biomedicine; independently carry out experimental, research and development activities including project team management
    • creatively and independently carry out experimental, research and development activities in various areas of molecular biology and genetics, including leading project teams
  • Occupational Profiles of Graduates

The Master's follow-up program Molecular Biology and Genetics deepens the basic knowledge of the areas of genetics and molecular biology that students have acquired during the Bachelor's degree program. It is one of the main MA programs of Masaryk University in the field of Biology, ecology and environment education, which is characterized by the persistent high interest of students from MU and other universities in the Czech Republic. During the Master's degree, students extend their knowledge of basic molecular biology and genetic disciplines, especially molecular biology, prokaryotes, eukaryotes, viruses, plant genetics, animal genetics and human genetics.
