  Please note: If the applicant is not yet a Master's graduate, please indicate the expected date of the Master's state examination on the CV. Applicants who have been admitted to the Doctoral degree programme must submit proof of completion of the Master's degree (an authorised conversion of the diploma, or, in the case of education obtained abroad, the so-called nostrification) before enrolment. Proof of completion of the master's degree is not required for the entrance examination.

  Special conditions:

  We are looking for the candidates with focus on:

  • analysis of archaeological sources,
  • environmental research,
  • geophysical prospection,
  • analysis of historical sources,
  • soil analysis,
  • archive data processing.

    The candidate may propose his/her own theme or issue that he/she wishes to investigate during the PhD studies. The selection committee has the right to modify the proposed theme or to offer the candidate a new theme.

    The candidate can also apply in parallel for the selection procedure for the position of PhD student for the project “Ready for the future: understanding long-term resilience of the human culture (RES-HUM)” in Programme Johannes Amos Comenius.

    The successful candidate will participate in research activities of the project “Ready for the future: understanding long-term resilience of the human culture (RES-HUM)” in Programme Johannes Amos Comenius (Czech Republic - The Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, co-funded by the European Union) which is focused on understanding basic principles of the resilience of human society in a historical perspective using long time series and on the transfer of the acquired knowledge into everyday social life. This objective will be achieved by promoting excellent research and developing collaboration between the humanities and natural sciences, such as archaeology, art history, anthropology, genetics, geology, climatology, botany, geophysics and nuclear physics. The programme aims to support the increase of the number of excellent R&D results in the Czech Republic and the development and support of excellent research teams with cutting-edge equipment in all aspects.

    The PhD student will be integrated in the research team of doc. Dr. Peter Milo in collaboration with his research group at Masaryk university. The candidate is expected to apply an innovative approach to archaeology and other disciplines, to pursue a holistic and interdisciplinary concept of research on human society and its resilience in the past.

      The form of the admission procedure:

      The admission procedure takes place in two rounds. In Round 1, the documents submitted in advance (CV, list of creative and publication activities and dissertation project) will be assessed. Round 2 will assess professional preparedness, motivation to study and previous research experience. Only successful candidates in Round 1 will be invited to Round 2. By prior arrangement, it is possible for the oral interview to take place online. The interview can be in English or Czech.

Evaluation criteria:

Round 1:

• CV: max. 10 points
• Creative and publishing activities: max. 20 points
• Dissertation project: max. 30 points

  If the candidate scores 41 - 60 points, the committee proposes that the candidate proceed to the second round for an oral interview. If the candidate scores less than 41 points, the panel proposes that the candidate is not admitted.

  Round 2:

  • Professional readiness: max. 30 points
  • Motivation to study: max. 20 points
  • Previous experience in research work: max. 10 points

    If the applicant scores 41 - 60 points, the committee proposes that the applicant be admitted to study. If the applicant scores less than 41 points, the committee proposes non-admission.

The aim of doctoral studies in the field of archaeology is to lead the students to independent and original scientific research in archaeology on an international level. The study is designed so that the students can apply and enhance their theoretical and methodological knowledge in a creative way. Focus is laid especially on own research work conducted under the supervision of a doctoral adviser, and on regular methodological seminars where topics and methods are discussed in a wider professional collective. The tuition also comprises regular lectures by foreign experts. A matter of course is regular presentation in research community and publication of partial results of research work. As a part of their professional training, doctoral students participate in teaching and research projects of their home department. Students are recommended to complete a research fellowship abroad. Doctoral studies in the field of archaeology cover all specialisations within this discipline. The Masaryk University has a competent team of doctoral supervisors and offers to doctoral students impulses and background for their research career on an international level.

After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

• solving important research problems in a creative way, developing methodological approaches, defining theoretical models
• presentation and publication of own research results in the international research community
• leading research teams and managing research projects
• carrying out educational and promoting work in academic institutions

The graduates are prepared for research work in academic institutions home and abroad. They will find employment as leaders and members of research teams, chief and research workers in a wide spectrum of archaeological and memory institutions, and as state and public administration officers.

Doctoral studies are designed as professional training for academic practice. The subjects of doctoral studies are focused on self-contained elaboration of scholarly papers for conferences and publications, professional discussion, and the structure of subjects also stimulates practical training within the scope of international cooperation. Full-time students in their practice participate in teaching and research projects of the Department.

Dissertation is submitted in three copies, in hardcover, on white paper of format A4 with numbered pages, in a minimum extent of 180,000 characters. Obligatory part of the author‘s manuscript is the title page which contains the name of the university, faculty, department, field of study, title of the work, name of the author, name of the thesis advisor or the consultant, and year of submission. The thesis must also contain author’s declaration of originality, content, and list of literature references.

Please, consult the structure and text of your dissertation continuously with your thesis advisor. An inevitable chapter of the thesis is the Methodological introduction, in which you elucidate how you have proceeded and why, which methods you have chosen, how you made the criticism of input data, etc.
