Degree programme specification
In this program, you will develop your knowledge and skills that you have acquired during your studies in the Bachelor's program in English Language and Literature, or another philological program. Within the program, you will engage in the scientific study of the English language based on theoretical approaches. So, you will not learn "language", but "about language". During your studies, you will not only gain knowledge in the field, but also develop your critical thinking skills and creative approach to problems. You will be able to choose one of two specializations - Linguistics or Literary and Cultural Studies. Within the program, you will complete five mandatory review courses. You will be able to choose other subjects from the list of optional and mandatory elective subjects according to your interest and focus. With the exception of some courses focusing on translation, the language of all teaching, student papers and exams is English. Most of the teaching takes place in the form of seminars, where active participation, teamwork and critical reflection on professional literature are expected. As part of the Erasmus+ programme, you can also spend one or two semesters abroad at our partner universities in the UK, Germany, Spain, France, Sweden, Finland, Belgium and other countries. We will give you the corresponding credit for the courses you take here. We will also support you in a diverse social life. Our students prepare the premiere of a play in the student theatre Gypsywood Players every year, organize Halloween and Creativity Night as part of the Escape English club, and write for the student magazines Re:Views and KAArdian.Is studying the programme for you?

Studies
- Objectives
This degree study programme is divided into two tracks: Linguistics and Literary and Cultural Studies. Each student chooses one specialization and the focus of their studies is in that track. All students must complete five type A/required courses. The remainder of the programme consists of type B/selective and type C/elective courses that the student chooses based on the track chosen. The student then writes a Master’s thesis based on the track and relevant coursework. With the exception of some courses in translation, all teaching, coursework, and exams in this study programme are carried out in the English language.
- Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the programme, the graduate is able to:
- write and speak in English with competence at the C2 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages;
- have a deep knowledge of literary and cultural theories and the literatures and cultures of English-speaking countries;
- have a deep knowledge of the approaches of modern functional linguistics, including the history of the English language;
- work independently and conduct critical analyses;
- analyse, evaluate and interpret primary as well as secondary texts from the fields of literary and cultural studies, linguistics and translation.
- Occupational Profiles of GraduatesAs graduates of this program, you will be able to communicate comprehensively in written and oral English and will be equipped with specialist knowledge of the main areas of the field, i.e. in linguistic and literary studies focused on English-speaking countries. Our graduates work in a variety of positions, as they are characterized by flexibility, the ability to think critically and process information creatively.
You can find work, for example, as an English teacher, translator or interpreter, but you can also apply yourself in other professions that require the ability to think independently critically and creatively, excellent expressive skills and good language skills. This may include editorial work, journalism, tourism, the non-profit sector or the international departments of companies.
- Practical TrainingInternship is not a mandatory part of this program. However, you can travel abroad for an internship within the Erasmus+ program, where you can apply your acquired knowledge and gain experience in a variety of positions. You can complete an internship, for example, in educational institutions, non-profit organizations or translation agencies.
- Goals of Theses
A minimum scope of a Master's thesis is no less than 125,000 characters including footnotes, annotations and references (excluding title pages, contents, acknowledgements and appendices). A Master's thesis has the character of an independent empirical research. Students can work with already published texts and data accessible for secondary analysis. The aim a Master's thesis is to demonstrate the student's ability to work critically with professional texts, process the concepts and theories discovered there, and find relevant answers to the given research question.
- Access to Further StudiesYou can continue in the doctoral study program, where you can conduct targeted research on your own research project.
If you meet the admission requirements, you can continue your studies in the doctoral study programs in Linguistics or Literary Philology, accredited at the Faculty of Arts of Masaryk University in Brno, or in other similar programs in the Czech Republic and abroad.
