History

The purpose of this Master’s degree study programme is to enhance the level of education and special competences for the professional work of a historian acquired during the Bachelor’s degree study programme. Students will deepen their knowledge of Czech and general history and their capability of working with a wide range of methods and become acquainted with a number of historiographical findings. The extent of the specialization within the Master’s degree study programme is primarily determined by the choice of a study plan.

The follow-up full-time Master’s degree study programme is aimed at graduates with a Bachelor’s degree in history from Masaryk University’s Faculty of Arts and at graduates in history and related subjects from other universities.

1) The course is specialized, which means that students choose one of the specializations on offer (Medieval History; History of the Early Modern Age; Modern History and Religious History).

2) The follow-up full-time Master’s degree study programme is on offer also in a form of a study plan for two-subjects study. This study is realised as a combination of a study plan for the major subject with a minor subject study plan that is part of a separate study programme.

After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

• analyse historical phenomena and processes and explain the significance of individual historical processes, events, and epochs and their influence on the subsequent development of society
• work with and interpret sources; be familiar with the basic methods of historical research and be able to work with a selected topic in a specialist historical text
• understand the basic methodological approaches to history and be familiar with academic literature

Graduates with this degree are qualified for positions as specialists in research institutions, libraries, museums, and information and documentation centres, and for work in the media and publishing. They are also qualified to work in managerial positions and in public relations in both the public and private sector. Graduates can also apply for a doctoral degree study programme in history and related subjects.

Students of a single-subject study plan and of a study plan in a major subject of two-subject study are obliged to submit a Master’s thesis before the final state examinations. The submitted Master’s thesis is intended to prove that based on literature and primary sources and under the guidance of a supervisor the student is able to define, critically analyse and interpret historical issues on an expert level.

The thesis is assigned upon the registration of the first Thesis Workshop, which is usually at the beginning of the third semester. The student is entitled to suggest the subject of his/her Master’s thesis based on agreement with one of the authorized teachers

The minimum length of the Master’s thesis is 140,000 characters. The thesis is written on white A4 paper, the paginated sheets are bound in hardcover. The title page is an obligatory part of the thesis. It contains the names of the university, faculty, department, title of the thesis, type of the thesis (Bachelor’s or Master’s), names of the author and the supervisor, year of submitting, author’s declaration on the originality of the thesis, contents, list of primary sources and literature and footnotes.. Students publish their thesis by means of inserting its digital version into IS MUNI.

Graduates can apply for a doctoral degree study programme in Czech history, general history, and related subjects.
