Degree programme objectives
The main objective of the Master’s degree study programme in Nordic Studies is to focuse on comprehensive philological education in the field of Nordic and Scandinavian studies in interdisciplinary perspective, studying general cultural subjects concerning the whole of Scandinavia while emphasizing contemporary issues, enriched with a relevant offer from sociological and historical fields.
The Master’s degree study programme in Nordic studies has two strategical parts in content and outcomes: 1) an expert and professional philology part (linguistics and literature) with a cross-discipline approach (area studies and sociolinguistics) and 2) a practical and applied part with the goal of using language comprehension and skills (translating and interpreting), with a focus on communication ability (texts).
The concept of the study programme is open to studying abroad, to Norwegian experts visiting Brno, and to study stays at a university institution in Norway. Other project activities and workshops are viewed as an important part of the studies.
They are also qualified for communicatiom and language-oriented jobs in institutions of the European Union or in other governmental and international institutions, in publishing houses and various branches of the media, in archives, libraries, museums, theatres, as language experts and alternatively in diplomacy. An important field are jobs in the tourisme branch, as guide, translator, PR manager in travel agencies.

After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:
- Translation and interpreting from and to norwegian in selected fields and disciplines
- Reading and writing norwegian texts on the level C1/C2
- Identifying and analyzing relevant problems in contemporary and historical issues
- Mediation and interpretation of Norwegian and Scandinavian literature and culture
- Critical evaluation of the Scandinavian position in Europe and cooperation wit Central Europe
- Occupational Profiles of Graduates
Graduates with this study programme are qualified for profession translator and interpreter on the level C1/C2. as translator of specialized non-fiction texts and fiction texts. Graduates are able to be employed as teachers at public and private secondary schools and at select types of universities and language schools. They are also qualified for expert and language-oriented jobs in the institutions of the European Union or in other governmental and international institutions, in publishing houses and various branches of the media, in archives, libraries, museums, theatres, and travel agencies, as language experts, and in diplomacy. The graduates professional skills are in culture intermediate work, publishing houses, tourist agency. The philology skills in theory and praxis they can use in other disiplines and doctor studies at Masaryk university or other institutions in Czech Republic or abroad.
- Practical Training
Practical training, such as arranging a cultural event, translating, and interpreting are included in all semesters of the Master’s degree study programme and recognized with credits.
- Goals of Theses
Diploma thesis on master Degree ranges min. 108 000 characters (60 sites) including footnotes, cover sheet, content, index, list of literature, and annotations. Text is standardly written in Norwegian. Students can work with already published texts and data accessible for secondary analysis. They should demonstrate the ability to work critically with specialized texts, process the concepts and theories discovered there, and find relevant answers to the given question. The Master thesis defense exam provides the ability to argue for the methods and outcomes.
Final state Master exam has two main parts: Written exam is a clause work on specialized topics, oral exam is a critical presentation og exam circle themes in landuage, linguistics, literature history and theory, as well as translatology. Focus is on Scandinavian and interdispiplinary overlap.
- Access to Further Studies
After completion of the Master's studies Nordis Studies , it is possible to continue further studies in doctoral degree programme (after satisfying the admission requirements), with specialization on comparative studies, German studies etc.
