TY - JOUR ID - 1071505 AU - Bělka, Luboš PY - 2012 TI - Tibetan deities with animal heads : Prague fragment of Bardo thödol PB - Department of Comparative Religion CY - Bratislava SN - 9788089027361 KW - Bardo thödol KW - Tibetan book of death KW - eschatology N2 - Tibetan eschatological text Bardo Thedol (The Tibetan Book of the Dead), beside others represents visions of a hundred of deities or figures of the Tibetan Buddhist pantheon. The figures may be divided into peaceful and wrathful, peaceful ones being 42 (appearing in the Bardo during the first days) and wrathful ones being 58 (appearing in the following days). Some of the wrathful figures are represented by deities with animal heads. In collections of Naprstek Museum there is a fragment of 12 figures, most of which bear animal heads. Their origin cannot be precisely determined, but most probably they are Tibetan miniature paintings. The contribution deals with description, analysis and context of the figures as well as with other similar deities. It also deals with a complex typology of the depiction of text of Bardo Thedol on thangkas (scrolled pictures painted or printed on canvas) and tsakli (printed and painted miniatures). ER -
