Abstract
Post-industrial landscapes (PIL) represent a typical phenomenon not only of developed countries. The PIL definition features are described in the paper, as well as data available in the Czech Republic and possibly in the most EU member states necessary for PILs identification. The PIL location, mapping and typology are the most common requirements of planners and decision makers on all levels of administration or resolution. A special GIS based procedure was used in the project of GAAV agency for relatively very accurate delineation of PILs and their consequent typology. It deals with the multi-layer integrated geodatabase containing industrial heritage data stored in accessible databases (e.g. human made industrial land forms, land use forms related with industry and other accompanying human activities, surface and underground mining, contaminated sites, waste deposits, etc.) with different topologies (point, line, polygon). The concentrations of PIK indices were identified using the applications of buffer zones, layer overlay, cartographic generalization procedures and multi-parameter typology. The 5 sq km size criterion was applied to distinguish PILs from smaller post-industrial areas. Various PIL classes from the origin and content viewpoints were identified in the Ústi Region in the North of Czech Republic, one of the most industrialized country territories since 18th century, but also the most affected by economical changes in 1990s.
