When providing high-resolution real-time video transmission, even moderate packet loss may have a significant impact on the resulting multimedia quality. Several methods are being used to cope with packet erasures, including redundant or multipath transmissions, forward error correction, or a combination of these approaches. Low-density Generator Matrix (LDGM) codes are considered to be suit- able for application-layer FEC. In this article, we study how GPUs can be helpful in providing high-performing error-correction mechanism for real- time multimedia applications. We propose a novel design of parallelized LDGM coding on GPU and also an optimized, vector-parallel approach to such coding on CPU. Furthermore, we compare the performance of both methods under various coding settings.
