Abstract

In mijn artikel onderzoek ik de receptie van de werken van Abdelkader Benali, Nederlandse auteur van Marokkaanse afkomst. Ik bestudeer 82 journalistieke recensies van Nederlandse en Vlaamse kranten en tijdschriften op zoek naar culturele classificaties. Sinds de immigranten in de Nederlandse literatuur debuteerden, discussiëren critici en theoretici over hun positie binnen het Nederlandse literaire veld. Ik onderscheid er twee belangrijkste aanpakken, volgens literaire theoreticus Urszula Topolska: een zogenaamde integrerende en separerende aanpak. De integrerende aanpak beschouwt deze migrantenauteurs als een volwaardig deel van Nederlandse literatuur en vergelijkt hen met de rest van Nederlandse auteurs. De separerende aanpak plaatst daarentegen deze auteurs buiten de rest. In mijn artikel kijk ik naar de separerende classificaties in de recensies, die naar Benali's culturele achtergrond verwijzen, en registreer ik hoe vaak ze voorkomen. Ik heb 82 recensies van 14 Benali's boeken verzameld. Ik bestudeerde hoe de critici noemden/classificeerden deze auteur en met welke schrijvers ze hem in verband gebracht hebben. De resultaten tonen dat de culturele classificaties slechts in het geval van de eerste twee boeken in méér dan één recensie voorkomen. In totaal waren maar 13% van de recensies cultureel (separerend) classificerend. Benali werd in 11% van de gevallen naast andere migrantenauteurs geplaatst, terwijl in 28% recensies werd hij met de auteurs van Nederlandse afkomst in verband gebracht. In de loop van de tijd zijn al de separerende classificaties in de recensies langzamerhand verdwenen.

Abstract (in English)

This article discusses the reception of Abdelkader Benali's work, a Dutch writer of Moroccan origin. I analyse a corpus of 82 journalistic reviews in order to trace cultural classifications. Ever since the literary debuts of immigrant writers were published, literary reviewers and scientists have debated about their position in the Dutch literary field. I distinguish two main approaches according to literary theorist Urszula Topolska: the so-called integrating and separating approach. The integrating approach considers these writers to be part of Dutch literature and compares them with other writers of Dutch origin. The separating approach, on the other hand, sets the allochton authors apart from the latter. In this study I examine how often separating classifications, reflecting Benali's cultural background, occur in journalistic reviews. I have collected 82 reviews of fourteen books by Abdelkader Benali. I have studied how the reviewers designated/classified him and which writers he is compared with. My results show that only in the case of the first two books, cultural classifications are present in more than one review. A total of 13% of the reviews were culturally classifying (separating). Benali has been compared to immigrant writers in 11% of the reviews, comparisons to writers of Dutch origin appeared in 28% of the reviews. Gradually all of the separating classifications slowly disappeared.
