Abstract
Lectins are capable of specific and reversible binding to carbohydrate moieties and are able to agglutinate cells. Carbohydrate-mediated recognition plays an important role in the ability of pathogenic bacteria to adhere to the surface of the host cell in the first step of their invasion and infectivity. The contribution is focused on characterization of the lectin from Gram-negative bacterium Photorhabdus luminescens, especially on determination of the function properties. Photorhabdus luminescens is a Gram-negative bacterium that is mutualistically associated with entomopathogenic nematodes from the genera Heterorhabditis. These nematodes infect the insect in larvae stage and release the bacteria into insect blood.
