Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is an anxiety disorder that can develop after exposure to stresfull event overwhelming the individual's ability to cope. PTSD may be caused by experiencing wide range of events: war, disaster, sexual abuse or car accident. Experiencing such an event may produces intense negative feelings of fear, grief and shock. Majority (80% to 90%) of those exposed to this type of trauma will eventually adapt. The rest of them become fixated on the event, and develop PTSD. Since the traumatic event is very clear cause of PTSD, there is an opportunity to prevent the onset of symptoms. Looking at intensive care units provide us with an idea of vaccination against PTSD. |
