Celková anestezie u císařského řezu je stále metodou volby při kritických stavech matky či při emergentním ohrožení života plodu. Při metaanalýze studií srovnávajících celkovou a neuraxiální anestezii nebyl v současnosti již nalezen signifikantní rozdíl v mateřské mortalitě, ani ve vlivu jednotlivých typů anestezie na adaptaci v termínu narozeného novorozence.
