Úlohou softwarového umění je poukazovat k fungování softwaru, ve smyslu formálních instrukcí a jejich uskutečnění, které jsou podstatou digitálních médií. Umělci často pracují v hraniční zóně programování, neboť právě limity fenoménu jim dovolí formulovat jeho vlastnosti v podobě čisté funkcionality principů, které ztělesňuje. Příklady softwarového umění, které ve svém příspěvku představím, poukazují k této praxi softwarového umění jako základního výzkumu v limitních oblastech programování.

The importance of software art lays in its experimental and critical dealing with new media. Software artists point towards limits and constrains of the software functioning within different fields of our culture and society, as well as they investigate functional features and virtualities of programmed media and computer code representations. They bring in the surface the hidden layers of the programmed media materiality to make perceivable principles it embodies, often in their liminal forms. Therefore these artistic practices can be described as programming of excesses.
